Best friends Sam and Margaret of Two Buds Floral Artistry are fresh and friendly faces in the Edmonton wedding world. We had the pleasure of meeting these ladies and seeing their fab floral designs in action at Bridal Fantasy, and are excited to share this interview with you today. Enjoy!
Tell us a bit about yourselves:
Margaret and I met in grade 3. We passed notes shaped as triangles through the hole in our desks that were side-by-side and we have been best friends since. Margaret is notoriously good at everything, except whistling. She is an artist at heart and loves to draw, do crosswords, knit, play the viola and piano; and spend her downtime relaxed at home with a good book and her cat Earl by her side. She is very adaptable, innovative and creativity comes naturally to her. I have to work harder to be creative, often using things as inspiration and making something my own with a unique twist (my brain isn’t wired to be as “artsy”!) I enjoy meeting with people, coming up with complex spreadsheets and creating forecasts – as an accountant, numbers are my forte! We are both very competitive by nature – always finding ways to improve ourselves and our business is important. But not as important as spending as much time with our supportive families as possible!
Now tell us about your business – what made you choose this creative path?
We wanted to do something that we love. Something that allows us to each channel our strengths and allows us to succeed! Flowers were the obvious choice after working for several local florists in the city. The design possibilities are endless, we get to meet new people everyday and there is always a beautiful flower in season! We started out working out of our homes, and now have a small design studio in the design district and we hope to expand to a full retail location soon.
What’s the best part of your job?
I love delivering the flowers and seeing the faces of the customer for the first time. Often times they place trust in us that the flowers will be what they want and when we exceed their expectations I get goosebumps.
Career highlights so far?
Heather De Kok gave us the opportunity to be a florist in Edmonton’s first Art in Bloom Festival. We were alongside other big florists like FaBLOOMosity, Cory Christopher, Deniss from Grower Direct, and Heather de Kok herself. The opportunity also to work with some of Edmonton’s finest art galleries was awesome – we really hit the ball out of the park! It was very rewarding showing everyone including industry leaders that even though we are small and still creating a spot in this industry for ourselves, we have the ability to create big and stunning results. As Janine (FaBLOOMosity) said herself, “Big things come out of small packages”. You can check out our work on our website.
YEG love! – favourite things to do in Edmonton? What do you love about living in river city?
Both being big animal lovers, we love the zoo. It is great seeing how far the Valley Zoo has come! We also love the river valley whether it be walking, doing the stairs, going for a run or taking the dogs for a walk – YEG never disappoints! The City also does such a great job with putting on festivals that we love to enjoy, for food, music, art, and theatre! I love that no matter where I go I will most likely run into someone I know. It’s the littlest BIG city and we love it.
