The “LOVE” marquis sign pictured above has become one of Edmonton’s most coveted wedding decor pieces – and it’s just one of Look Events‘ many stylish rental items. Owner Kristy Benckhuysen is equal parts friendly and creative, and we are so pleased to introduce her to you today! At our vendor social in September, Look Events styled an awesome drink table to fit our black and gold theme. It was a delight to work with Kristy, and I’m sure that any couple would be lucky to have her on their wedding team!
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I’m Kristy Benckhuysen (soon to be Irving!) and I am the Creative Director and Event Coordinator for Look Events – a company I started with my dad two years ago. Writing lists, dancing in my car, and drinking coffee are all a part of my daily routine!
Now tell us about your business – what made you choose this creative path?
Look Events is based in Leduc – a place that I’m proud to call home after being away for 5 years. As a company we love to take on new challenges. I’m the one who thinks up new designs and custom rentals while my dad is the one who makes them happen. I always call him “my muscle”- we make a good team!
I named the company Look Events because when guests arrive to a venue I want them to be amazed and say, “Look!” Our tagline is “We create it, you experience it.” I believe if an event is done correctly you leave feeling like it was an experience that will last rather than just another night out.
What’s the best part of your job?
Wow-ing people! I love designing an event and having the trust of our clients to really create it – bringing in the couple to show them the final product of their event is always an exciting moment for me.
Career highlights so far?
Winning best vendor booth at Bridal Fantasy last January was validation of my OCD and my constant need for doing more! Plus, every time I wrap up an event and I’m left with a happy bride and groom it constantly goes into the pros column of running a business- my clients are definitely the highlight.
YEG love! – favourite place to eat in Edmonton?
In my opinion the most crucial meal of the day is brunch (mimosas + waffles = magic!). Barb and Ernie’s (Old Country Inn) is the perfect spot if you’re looking for friendly staff and a great home cooked meal. So cozy. Also, brunch enjoyed in the sun on the patio at Sugarbowl makes me feel like I can conquer any day!
Share the love – any other YEG wedding superstars you love working with?
I started my career in Entertainment Business Management at age 20 so I love seeing young talent being passionate about what they do. Megan Rae Photography is a prime example – she captivates the moments of people and her work is stunning!
Adele of Corinthia Flowers in Leduc is my go to florist because she is always willing to collaborate and design new arrangements in new ways. She has never said, “I can’t do that.”
And the Leduc West Antique Society is such a hidden gem as a venue. So much space, so many opportunities for great photos and an absolute joy to work with.
