It was so hard to narrow down what photos to include from this gorgeous wedding – between Virginia Quist’s talented work and this couple’s sense or style, there were just too many great images to share! Seamus popped the question with a little help from their puppy, who makes a few appearances on their wedding day. Read on for perfectly on-trend details and a bride with the biggest smile ever!
how did you meet?
Seamus was convinced he “wasn’t allowed” to talk to me – because I was his boss’s daughter! But, despite my oblivion to this and through mutual friends, we never failed to run into each other while we were out having fun two-stepping every weekend, at many social outings in Peace River (where we’re both originally from). I moved to Edmonton and as they say, “distance makes the heart grow fonder,” and that was just it – in September 2008, while we were at an Eskimos football game together, we decided we couldn’t let the distance get between us anymore… and the rest is history!
what was the proposal like?
It was February 14, 2014 (he thinks, “cliche;” I think, “it’s about time!” (just kidding)). He left for work (so I thought) at the usual early hour and I did the same. Instead, he arrived unannounced at my parents’ (in Peace River… 5hrs away) to ask my Dad the important question (then drove back to Edmonton)! On an engraved plaque he had designed for our newly adopted puppy, Stella to wear, read, “will you marry my Dad?” and with our favourite song, “Better Together” playing in the background, I walked in to Seamus down on one knee and of course, I said YES!
tell us about the planning process! was there anything you were worried wouldn’t work, but turned out awesome?
We were engaged for a year and a few months, which gave us plenty of time to get organized, do our research, really enjoy the planning process and have fun making our big day exactly how we wanted. Having a wedding coordinator (Jannika of the Oasis Centre) for that time gave us great ideas and truly helped shape our vision of the day into perfection! We ultimately wanted everyone we know and love to enjoy the day as much as we did – Which made it the best day ever!
what was the best moment of the day?
One of the (many) best moments of the day for me, (Katelyn) was our life-changing smooch and being announced as the new Mr. & Mrs. Gates! AND of course, our sparklers in the stunning backdrop of The Oasis Centre’s garden that they illuminated just for us! For me, (Seamus) the same as above, as well as being surrounded by all our favourite people… And the vintage fire truck food truck, Canicus, that catered wood-fire pizza for our midnight lunch!
got any advice for someone planning an edmonton wedding?
Friday weddings for the win! It was one of the best decisions we made – when we were booking our vendors, we didn’t have to worry about being disappointed because of unavailability; and, we had the rest of the weekend to relax (recuperate) with our out-of-town friends and family! June weddings for the win win!! The weather is beautiful and everyone is ready for a wedding and excited for wedding season!!
