we LOVE when couples let their personalities shine through in the details of their wedding, and Kayla and Rhys did just that. the photographers at Deep Blue Photography shared a few more details of their superhero-themed wedding with us:
Kayla & Rhys’ mutual love for all things superhero coupled with Kayla’s creative and artistic talents saw this couple create a DIY themed wedding, small on budget but big on fun!
Kayla and Rhys incorporated small details and personal touches into their wedding day to make their day reflect them as a couple and the life they have worked to create. For their engagement session they brought along two figurines – one Iron Man and the other Wonder Woman. These cute figures made their appearance in their engagement session, and on the wedding day sat atop the cake.
who is your favorite superhero?
For Kayla, it is definitely Wonder Woman! She incorporated the WW look with a gold chain belt woven with blue and red satin ribbon. She also sported stunning red and blue heels that really brought her look together, and forgoing the traditional veil, Kayla sported a one-of-a-kind superhero “POW” headband. All of the paper-flower bouquets were handmade by Kayla.
Rhys showed his love for Iron Man with his red and gold accessories and awesome cufflinks, and who better to guard the groom on his wedding day than his groomsmen, superheroes in their own right! A few of whom are current or past Edmonton Eskimos Cheerleaders, and the ones responsible for the bride and groom soaring to epic heights during their portrait session!
how did you meet?
Rhys and I meet in grade school. He was in grade 7 and I was in grade nine. I developed the biggest crush on Rhys. We became good friends. Then it was time for me to transfer in to my high school years, we lost contact for about 6 years and than the joys of Facebook brought us back together. The rest is history.
what was the proposal like?
Our proposal is not quite the romantic ones you hear about. Rhys and I had been in a huge argument for a couple of days before he proposed to me. Rhys asked me to meet him at my favourite restaurant, Cocoas, a very quiet restaurant in city centre. We had an amazing dinner, Rhys had secretly planned with the waiter ahead of time to bring out our dessert which was a crème brûlée, on a platter with candles and fruit. Nestled on top of the crème brûlée was a ring box. When I opened up the box Rhys was down on one knee.
tell us about he planning process:
Needless to say the whole process was STRESSFUL! I had very little to no help, had zero clue what I was doing, By the end I threw my hands in the air hoping this would just turn out.
what was your favourite part of planning your wedding?
Making all of the handmade flower bouquets for the bridesmaids. It was very tedious work but very beautiful in the end.
what was the best part of your wedding day?
Doing our first look photos, getting to relieve all the stress of the day before the wedding and getting to spend some alone time with each other.
do you have any advice for couples planning an Edmonton wedding?
Just know that you can’t make everyone happy, no matter how hard you try someone will always be upset. Know that at the end of the day all that matters is your happiness.
Would like to thank St. Albert Botanic Park for the beautiful ceremony location. The staff at the Old Spaghetti Factory (downtown location), they handled our reservation very smoothly! And also Cakes by Alanna, she made our wedding cake taste exactly like the crème brûlée dessert Rhys used to propose.
