tell us a bit about yourselves:
We are Sunny and Jess, and with our dog Bella, we are Deep Blue Photography. We met in 2007 at the University of Alberta while volunteering for the same student group, and started dating near the end of the school year. In December of 2008 Sunny proposed to Jess while visiting New York City and 5 years later (to the date) we said our “I do’s” on the beaches of Tahiti. Being wedding photographers, we knew exactly what we wanted for our photos – so we photographed our own wedding – with the help of some family, friends, tripods, remote triggers and timers.
We love travelling, especially when we can take Bella with us. Every year we take a little time for ourselves and go on an “epic road trip”, whether it is hiking in the Rockies, driving to Prince Edward Island or this year’s trip, heading to Mayo, Yukon for the summer solstice, we love adventure! When the weather gets cold, we don our Oilers jerseys, capes and wigs (like diehard fans) and head to Rexall to cheer on the team. Even Bella has her own jersey!
now tell us about your business – what made you choose this creative path?
It was random happenstance really. It was never on our radar and never something we had thought about or dreamed of doing. We have both always loved taking photographs, whether it was travelling to new places or capturing moments with family and friends, and in 2011 we were asked to photograph a friend’s wedding. Then another friend’s wedding. Then a family member’s wedding. We were intrigued by the opportunity and decided to try our hands at wedding photography. That summer we photographed 9 weddings – all for free, for friends/family and random people we found on Kijiji. We didn’t really know what we were doing, so we certainly weren’t going to charge people, but the experience and knowledge we gained that summer has been invaluable.
By the end of the summer we knew we loved it, Sunny left his full time job and plans for law school, and we put together a full business plan of how to transition from “real-jobs” to full time wedding photography. In November 2011 we formed Deep Blue Photography and haven’t looked back!
what is the best part of your job?
there is a lot to love when it comes to wedding photography, we love being right there to capture the memories and moments of one of the happiest days of people’s lives. We love that we get to hang out every weekend with awesome people as they celebrate their love. Literally, every weekend is a party.
Owning our own business has also been a very rewarding experience, especially since we’ve been able to see it grow year after year to where we are now.
career highlights so far?
We have had some awesome experiences in our few short years, but 2014 was a really great year – we placed 20th overall in Canada by the Professional Wedding Photographers of Canada’s yearly ranking. Sunny was named one of Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 wedding photographers by Canada Photo Convention. In 2014 we also photographed our first destination wedding in Jamaica!
