date night – edmonton streetcar shows

date night

ever on the search for fun and creative date night ideas in edmonton, i have been keeping my eye on the schedule for Edmonton Streetcar Shows. i’ve been aware of this concert series for more than a year, and have been waiting patiently for a particular musician to perform before i bought tickets. i am a big fan of Braden Gates, a young edmonton folk musician, and when i saw his name listed on the bill for an upcoming concert atop the High Level Bridge i leapt to buy tickets – and just in time… there were only 5 tickets left!

last week, the day came for our Streetcar Show date, and we were both so excited. neither of us had been on the High Level Bridge Streetcar before, and it was a gorgeous evening. we started off the night with a quick bite at Oodle Noodle (the best!), and headed over to board the streetcar, just behind the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market building.

here’s how the night went down…

i was actually surprised at how exhilarating it was to be in the middle of the high level bridge – without being able to see much of the bridge, it really feels like you’re suspended fifty metres above the river. when the streetcar got halfway across the river, it parked for an intimate musical performance. oh, and here’s a selfie 😉

after a lovely set of music by Braden Gates, the streetcar continued to the other side of the river, where it stopped to prepare for the return journey. on a more clear night, the streetcar would be an incredible place to watch the sun set over the river. however, on this night, there were too many clouds in the sky to witness the sunset. regardless, the view of the illuminated city skyline on the return journey was breathtaking in itself. on the way back across the river, we stopped again for the second set of music.

all in all, i would most definitely recommend a streetcar show for a date night! the service was lovely, booking was easy, and you simply can’t beat the view, the experience, and the chance to take in such an intimate musical performance. tickets were $30 each, and i feel that they are well worth that price. they do sell out fast, though! i talked to one of the organizers, and she encouraged people to sign up for their e-mail list, as that is the best way to find out about upcoming shows, including secret shows, only open to e-mail list subscribers. you can sign up for the e-mail list here.

thanks so much to the team at Edmonton Streetcar Shows for the lovely date night, and to Braden Gates for the fantastic soundtrack!
