when i first saw a sneak peek of this wedding on Jessica Fern Facette’s facebook page, i was in love – turquoise & pink is one of my favourite colour combinations, and the bouquets were just perfect. but wait – i found out later that they are made of paper! how awesome is that?! as it turns out, many of the details in chithra and jeff’s wedding were lovingly made by the couple and their friends and family – and they did an incredible job of pulling all the details together to create an absolutely beautiful, personality-filled day. read on to hear about how the couple made this chic wedding a reality, and some of their post-wedding gems of advice.

tell us about the planning process:

we knew we wanted a ceremony and reception space with windows, as we both love how photos look taken in natural light. the Holiday Inn Express and Shaw Conference Centre’s Riverview Room both have two walls of windows, which let in plenty of sunlight, helping us achieve the look we were going for.

we found our photographer, Jessica Fern Facette, through an online search. we were impressed with how her photos told a story, and how she emphasized candid over posed photographs. her portfolio was just so much fun to look through.

after booking our venues and photographer, we started making countless trips to Michaels for materials to make our invitations and envelope liners, table numbers, cake topper, place cards, paper diamonds (used for the centerpieces), confetti, and our gift table items (wooden C&J sign, envelope box, etc.) over 9 months, we chipped away at each DIY with friends and family, which i think helped us grow closer!

we both love being creative and making things, so we wanted to handcraft as much of the décor as possible. all the flowers were made out of paper: including the bridal and bridesmaid bouquets, centrepieces, boutonnieres, corsages, the giant flower ceremony backdrop and the flowers flanking the aisle runner. it was definitely a labor of love!

was there anything you were worried wouldn’t work, but turned out awesome?

i had trouble finding a dress with cap sleeves, so i ended up ordering one online, which was non-refundable. after some minor alterations, it ended up being perfect. i got lucky!

funny stuff from the day:

our wedding day was rainy and windy. after stepping off the bus to go take pictures, my veil whipped off my head and went flying down the street, resulting in a wild chase to retrieve it. our handmade ‘just married’ sign also was completely blown away by the time we got to our reception destination. i’m happy to say the weather didn’t negatively impact the day at all, we were all too excited to let it get us down!

highlights of the day:

seeing my bridesmaids look amazing in their mismatched dresses. being moved to tears while reciting vows. seeing how proud all of our parents were as we walked out of the ceremony. hanging out on the school bus with the bridal party. hearing jeff’s surprise song. dancing the night away at the reception.

what was the best moment of the day?

when jeff surprised me at the reception with a song he’d been practicing for several months. it was so sweet!

got any advice for someone planning an edmonton wedding?

make sure you like the personalities of your vendors, especially your photographer. there is so much back and forth with questions and logistical details, and it would be a downer to have to do that with someone who wasn’t excited about your big day. we felt lucky that all of our vendors were delightful to work with.

we had a monday wedding (the day before Canada Day, so everyone was able to stay up late for the party), and since it was a weekday, it resulted in us getting sizeable discounts on our DJ, photographer, and ceremony space rental.

last bit of advice: we wrote personalized messages or inside jokes in each place card. it was a hit! so many people came up to us and said it helped make the wedding feel more intimate and that they felt appreciated as a guest. i totally recommend doing this if you have the time.
